Mountain weather conditions can change dramatically from one hour to the next. Therefore it is important to layer clothes to protect yourself from the cold:
- 1st layer or base layer: thermal underwear worn against your skin
- 2nd layer or mid-layer: fleece jackets, ski sweaters, down jackets worn both as 1st and 2nd layer
- 3rd layer or outer layer: ski jackets and ski pants
The “layering system” allows you to make quick adjustments based on your activity level and changes in the weather. Each layer has a function. The base layer manages moisture, the mid-layer protects you from the cold and the outer layer shields you from wind and rain. You simply add or subtract layers as needed.
